Enshrouded's voxel-based continent creates a hosting scenario most survival games never face. The terrain is fully destructible and rebuildable, so every tunnel your group digs, every cliffside you carve a base into, and every crater left by an ambitious mining session becomes permanent world state the server has to store, load, and stream to players. A dedicated server keeps that world online around the clock, but understanding how the game actually consumes resources will keep you from paying for the wrong plan.

Why Voxel Terrain Drives Your Hosting Cost

Most survival games ship a static map and only track the structures players place on top of it. Enshrouded stores terrain modifications as data layered over the base world, and that has three practical consequences:

  • World saves grow over time. A fresh server has a small save file. Six weeks of digging, terraforming, and building across multiple bases produces a much larger one, which makes saves, backups, and restarts slower.
  • RAM usage scales with player spread, not just player count. The server streams voxel data around each connected player. Four players exploring four different corners of the map load far more world than eight players raiding the same dungeon together.
  • Backups matter more than usual. Because the world itself is mutable, a corrupted save does not just lose your chests, it loses the landscape you shaped. Automated, frequent backups are not optional here.

Combat is the other half of the equation. Enshrouded's fights are action oriented, with dodges, parries, and aimed spells. A server that stutters under load turns boss fights into guesswork, so consistent tick performance and low ping matter more than they would in a slower survival game.

RAM and CPU Sizing by Scenario

The official cap is 16 players, but slot count alone is a poor predictor. Use the scenario that matches how your group actually plays:

ScenarioPlayersRAMNotes
Duo or small co-op, fresh world1-44GBOne base, limited exploration
Regular group, mid game4-86GBMultiple bases, players often split up
Full server, mature world8-168GBHeavy terraforming, most of the map explored
Long-running community world8-168GB+Large save file, budget headroom for updates

On the CPU side, Enshrouded rewards strong per-core performance over core count. When comparing hosts, a plan on a recent high-clock CPU with 6GB of RAM will usually feel better than a plan with more RAM on older shared hardware. Expect to pay anywhere from about $5 to $28/month depending on plan size, with plans that comfortably run a full group typically landing in the $12-$28 range.

Server Settings That Actually Matter

Enshrouded's dedicated server is configured through enshrouded_server.json, and a few fields there have real performance and cost implications:

  • slotCount: The single biggest lever. Reserved slots consume resources even when empty on some panels, and more concurrent players means more loaded terrain. Set it to your real group size plus a couple of spares, not the maximum.
  • userGroups: Later updates added role-based permissions with per-group passwords. Use these instead of sharing one admin password, especially on semi-public servers where a griefer with terrain tools can do lasting damage.
  • Difficulty presets and custom game settings: Sliders for enemy damage, resource drops, and day length change gameplay, not server load. Do not expect a "relaxed" preset to reduce hardware needs.

The game is still receiving substantial content patches, and updates sometimes change server behavior or requirements. A host with one-click updates and the ability to roll back to a pre-patch backup will save you real frustration on patch days.

Common Mistakes When Renting

  • Buying 16 slots for a 4-person friend group. You are paying for capacity you will never use. Start small and upgrade.
  • Treating week-one RAM usage as permanent. A fresh world idles low. Judge your plan after the group has built a few bases and opened up the map.
  • Choosing a region by price instead of ping. Enshrouded's dodge-and-parry combat is far less forgiving of 150ms latency than a base-building session is.
  • Skipping backup configuration. Assuming backups are on by default is how people lose terraformed worlds after a bad patch or crash.
  • Wiping the world to "fix" performance. If a mature world runs poorly, the fix is usually more RAM or better hardware, not deleting months of progress.

When Self-Hosting Makes More Sense

Keen Games ships a free dedicated server tool through Steam, and it runs fine on a spare Windows machine. Self-hosting is the right call when your group plays in scheduled sessions, everyone is in the same region, and someone has a PC with 16GB+ of RAM and solid upload bandwidth that can stay on during play times.

Renting wins when the group spans time zones and wants the world available 24/7, when nobody wants to deal with port forwarding and manual updates, or when the world has grown valuable enough that professional backups are worth a few dollars a month. For most groups that survive past the first month, that trade tips toward renting quickly.

What to Look For in a Host

Beyond raw specs, prioritize hosts that offer automatic game updates after patches, scheduled off-site backups, easy RAM upgrades without a server migration, and server locations near your players. Enshrouded is an actively developed game with a mutable world, and the hosts that handle those two facts gracefully are the ones worth paying for.
