Space Engineers hosting is a game of escalation. Your server starts light, a few respawn pods and small mining ships, but as players build capital ships, planetary bases, and automated drone fleets, the physics simulation grows until it dominates whatever hardware you rented. More than almost any other game we cover, the plan that runs a fresh SE world is not the plan that runs a six-month-old one.

In Space Engineers, every ship, station, and rover is a grid, a collection of connected blocks the server must physically simulate. Grids are the currency of server load:

  • Blocks per grid: Larger ships cost more per simulation step, and collisions between big grids produce the famous lag spikes.
  • Subgrids: Pistons, rotors, and hinges create mechanically coupled grids, the most expensive physics in the game. A walking mech is adorable and computationally brutal.
  • Programmable blocks: In-game scripts execute on the server. One inefficient inventory-sorting script multiplied across a fleet can eat a surprising share of your tick budget.

The health metric is sim speed, visible in the admin screen. 1.0 means the server simulates in real time; below that, everything in the world slows down. Watching sim speed as your world matures tells you exactly when to upgrade or clean up.

RAM keeps the world loaded, but single-thread CPU speed is what holds sim speed at 1.0 once grids multiply. Between two plans at the same price, take the one on newer, higher-clock hardware over the one with more cores. Expect entry plans around $12-$15/month, scaling up with world size and player count, and treat the upgrade path as part of the purchase decision.

Torch, Plugins, and Workshop Mods

Serious SE servers rarely run the bare Keen dedicated server. Torch is a community server wrapper that adds a plugin system, remote management, and the performance tooling the vanilla server lacks:

  • Concealment-style plugins pause physics for grids no player is near, often the single biggest sim speed win on a big world.
  • Essentials adds admin commands, autorestarts, and cleanup automation.
  • Profiling plugins identify which grid or script is eating your tick time, turning "the server is lagging" into "Dave's drone script is lagging."

Steam Workshop mods layer on top: WeaponCore, Build Vision, and countless block packs are staples. Every mod costs some RAM and load time, and combat overhauls in particular add CPU work. When choosing a host, confirm it supports Torch or at least full file access, because a panel that only installs vanilla SE locks you out of the tools that keep mature worlds playable.

Settings That Keep Sim Speed at 1.0

Server configuration is your first line of defense, cheaper than any hardware upgrade:

  • PCU limits: Performance Cost Units assign a cost to every block and cap total simulation load per player or faction. This is the game's built-in budget system; use it.
  • Block and grid limits: Per-player caps prevent one prolific builder from sinking the server for everyone.
  • Trash removal: The built-in cleanup deletes abandoned grids, floating objects, and distant debris on a schedule. Aggressive trash settings are the difference between a world that ages gracefully and one that drowns in derelicts.
  • Sync and view distance: Lower sync distance reduces how much the server streams to each client, a meaningful saving on busy servers.
  • Scheduled restarts: The SE server accumulates memory over long uptimes; a daily restart window is standard practice, not an admission of failure.

Common Mistakes When Renting

  • Sizing for day one. A 4GB plan runs a fresh world beautifully and hits a wall in month two. Buy from a host where upgrading RAM is a button, not a migration ticket.
  • Running no limits "because it's just friends." Friends build walking mechs with 40 rotors too. Set PCU and block limits from the start; retrofitting them onto an existing world causes drama.
  • Ignoring programmable block policy. Decide early whether in-game scripts are allowed and which ones, or profile them with Torch when sim speed dips.
  • Blaming the host for physics. If sim speed tanks when two capital ships collide, that is the game. Judge a host on baseline sim speed with a healthy world, not on crash landings.

When Self-Hosting Makes More Sense

Self-hosting suits small groups who play together in sessions and have one technically inclined member.

Renting wins for persistent worlds that friends check on daily, for communities beyond a handful of players, and for anyone who does not want to manage Torch updates, backups, and a machine running around the clock. Given how much SE worlds grow, the flexibility to click an upgrade button mid-playthrough is worth more here than in most games.
