Unturned's blocky graphics are deceiving. Underneath is a surprisingly deep zombie survival game with one of the most active modding communities on Steam, and because the game is free-to-play, a well-run community server can actually fill up with strangers, something most niche survival games can only dream of. It is also one of the cheapest games on this site to host, which makes it a common first server, and a common source of first-server mistakes.

Why Unturned Is So Cheap to Host

The Unturned dedicated server is a lightweight Unity build with modest simulation demands. Zombies are simple agents, maps are hand-crafted rather than procedurally streamed, and the base game carries none of the physics or voxel overhead that inflates hosting costs elsewhere. The practical result:

  • Entry plans are genuinely enough. Servers start around $5/month, and 2GB of RAM comfortably handles 24 players on a standard map.
  • Costs come from what you add. Plugins, workshop mods, large custom maps, and high slot counts are what push you into bigger plans, not the vanilla game.
  • The free-to-play playerbase cuts both ways. Filling a server is easier, but so is attracting cheaters and ban evaders, which shapes what you should look for in a host.

Sizing by Server Type

Server TypeSlotsRAMNotes
Vanilla survival, standard map242GBPEI, Washington, Russia
PvP with plugins24-322-3GBKits, economy, teleports add overhead
RP with heavy plugin stack32-483-4GBPersistent builds, many custom systems
Large workshop map, modded484GBBig maps and asset packs need headroom

CPU rarely limits an Unturned server at these scales, but combat-heavy PvP servers with high slot counts benefit from decent single-core performance, and oversold budget hosts show it first as rubber-banding during fights.

RocketMod, OpenMod, and the Plugin Ecosystem

Almost no community server runs bare Unturned. RocketMod is the classic plugin framework that gave servers permissions, commands, kits, and economies, and its plugin catalog is enormous. OpenMod is the modern successor, better architected and where newer development happens, though the RocketMod library remains larger. Staples across both ecosystems include:

  • Uconomy: In-game currency and shops
  • Kits: Starter gear and VIP loadouts
  • TPA: Teleport requests between players
  • DeathMessages: A kill feed for PvP servers

The hosting implication is simple: you need full file access via FTP or the control panel to install frameworks, drop in plugin DLLs, and edit their config files. A host whose panel offers one-click RocketMod or OpenMod installs saves real setup time, but file access is the non-negotiable part.

Workshop content works differently from plugins. Custom maps, weapon packs, and vehicle mods install through the server's WorkshopDownloadConfig.json, which lists the Workshop file IDs the server downloads and serves. Players then download the same content automatically on join, so a bloated workshop list means long first-join times, the same curation discipline that applies to GMod applies here at smaller scale.

Config That Actually Matters

Unturned servers are configured through plain text files, chiefly Commands.dat, and a few lines there shape both performance and player experience:

  • Map: Standard maps are cheapest; large workshop maps like Hawaii, Greece, or Elver deserve an extra 512MB-1GB of headroom for their asset counts.
  • MaxPlayers: The honest driver of resource needs. 24-32 for standard maps, up to 48 for large ones.
  • Perspective: First-person-only servers play very differently from third-person; decide before launch, not after your community forms.
  • Cheats and Sync: Leave cheats off on public servers; enable Rocket's permission system for admin powers instead of blanket cheat access.
  • Queue_Size and Timeout: Matter once a server actually gets popular; defaults are fine until then.

Pair the config with BattlEye enabled and at least one server-side anti-cheat or moderation plugin. Because Unturned is free, banned cheaters can create new accounts in minutes, so plugins that support ID and IP-based moderation earn their keep on any public PvP server.

Common Mistakes When Renting

  • Overbuying at the start. Unturned is the poster child for starting on an entry plan. Upgrade when you see sustained population, not before.
  • Stacking plugins without testing. RocketMod plugins vary wildly in quality and age; an abandoned plugin that breaks after a game update can take the whole server down. Add a few at a time.
  • Skipping restarts on modded servers. A restart every 6-8 hours prevents the slow memory creep long-running modded instances develop.
  • Ignoring DDoS protection. Free-to-play communities attract exactly the people who think booting a server offline is funny. Mitigation is worth more than an extra gigabyte of RAM.
  • Launching on a dead map choice. Vanilla PEI servers are abundant; a curated workshop map or a clear niche (RP rules, arena format) is what makes a new server worth joining.

When Self-Hosting Makes More Sense

The Unturned dedicated server is a free SteamCMD download and light enough to run on nearly any spare computer, so hosting private games for friends yourself costs nothing and teaches you the config files in an afternoon. That is genuinely the right choice for closed groups.

Public servers flip the math. You want a data center IP with DDoS mitigation, 24/7 uptime so the server holds its spot in the in-game browser, and painless backups when a plugin misbehaves. At around $5/month, renting a public Unturned server is one of the cheapest ways to run a real gaming community, and the convenience premium over self-hosting is about the price of a sandwich.
